Sanju Samson Shines in IPL Clash, Echoes MS Dhoni's Legacy
Samson's Stellar Performance in IPL 2026
In a thrilling encounter during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Sanju Samson showcased his skills, reinforcing his position as a successor to MS Dhoni. The match featured the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) facing off against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 26. Although GT captain Shubman Gill was dismissed by Noor Ahmed, it was Samson's impressive wicketkeeping that drew significant attention. As GT aimed to chase a target of 159 runs, Gill provided a strong start, scoring 55 runs in the powerplay without losing his wicket. However, he was out in the following over when Noor Ahmed bowled a wide delivery that Gill missed. Samson quickly capitalized on the situation, executing a swift stumping that left spectators in awe.

Gill's dismissal brought back memories of a similar incident during the 2023 IPL final, where he was also stumped, this time by Ravindra Jadeja. That moment, too, was marked by Dhoni's remarkable quickness behind the stumps, which left a lasting impression on cricket fans.

Gill's Quick Start for GT
Shubman Gill scored 33 runs off 23 balls, featuring one boundary and three sixes, before his dismissal. His aggressive approach during the powerplay was crucial for the Titans, who ultimately chased down the target comfortably, winning by eight wickets with 20 balls remaining. Sai Sudharsan emerged as the standout performer, scoring 87 runs off 46 balls. Earlier, Gill won the toss and opted to bowl, a decision that paid off as CSK lost three wickets in the powerplay. Kagiso Rabada was instrumental, taking three wickets for just 25 runs, including the key wicket of Samson, who managed only 11 runs.
CSK set a total of 158 runs, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the scoring with an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls.
Samson's Impactful Start with CSK
Samson joined CSK for the 2026 season after a trade from the Rajasthan Royals, ending a 13-year tenure with the franchise, where he also served as captain for the last five seasons. The Player of the Tournament from the 2026 T20 World Cup has made a significant impact, accumulating 304 runs in eight matches, including two centuries. He has also taken on wicketkeeping duties in the absence of Dhoni, who is recovering from a calf injury. There is still uncertainty regarding when the five-time IPL champion will return to action, but CSK's batting coach Mike Hussey has indicated that Dhoni will reclaim the gloves once fit, which would shift Samson to an outfield position.
