Sanju Samson Reflects on Virat Kohli's Fitness Advice

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 27: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson recently discussed the valuable fitness and lifestyle advice he received from cricketing icon Virat Kohli during a gym session. Samson emphasized how he has attempted to incorporate this guidance into his daily routine.

During the ICC T20 World Cup, where he emerged as the top run-scorer and was named 'Player of the Tournament' with 321 runs, including multiple half-centuries, Sanju shared his thoughts on JioStar's 'Believe' program.

He praised Kohli's intense dedication in the gym, recalling how the batting legend advised him on the importance of a disciplined diet and lifestyle for an international cricketer. Although he initially followed Kohli's recommendations, he admitted to losing focus over time.

"Virat bhai is straightforward and clear about what needs to be done. His energy in the gym is inspiring, and I admire that about him. While working out together during a team camp, I asked him for advice. He emphasized that a proper lifestyle is crucial for success in cricket. He shared insights on nutrition, saying, 'This food will aid your recovery, while that won't. If you maintain this discipline for the next decade, you'll have a successful career.' I adhered to this for about a year and a half, but eventually, I lost my way," he explained.

Sanju also addressed his mindset leading up to the T20 World Cup, particularly after losing his position as the first-choice wicketkeeper to Ishan Kishan. He expressed his desire to enjoy the game without getting caught up in the competitive frenzy.

"I recognized the ongoing rat race in our sport and decided before the 2026 T20 World Cup that I wouldn't participate in it. I want to enjoy playing cricket. By God's grace, I've accomplished much. At 31, I have a few years left, and I intend to play on my own terms. No one will dictate how I should bat or what I should do. Sanju will make those decisions," he stated.

"I will play, enjoy the game, be a supportive teammate, and do things my way. After the 2024 World Cup, I didn't even expect to be part of the 2026 squad. So, how can I plan for 2028? If I'm needed and performing well, everything will align. If not, I remain grateful for my achievements, including my T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament award," he concluded.

In his T20I career, Samson has amassed 1,432 runs in 66 matches, averaging 27.01 with a strike rate of 155.99, including three centuries and six fifties, with a top score of 111. In ODIs, he has scored 510 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 56.66 and a strike rate of 99.60, featuring one century and three fifties, with a best of 108.
