Samson Discusses Managing External Pressure
In a recent statement, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson acknowledged that external opinions can influence him, but he has developed strategies to stay focused on his preparation and responsibilities within the team. This comes after India's decisive seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the second T20I, which secured a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
With the final match set for September 17, India aims to complete a series whitewash. During the post-match press conference, Samson emphasized the challenges of scoring runs for the national team, noting that players must accept tough decisions when the team's interests take precedence.
He remarked, "Scoring runs for the Indian team isn’t straightforward. A young player like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 700-800 runs in the IPL, was brought into the squad due to his impressive form. I hadn’t performed well in a few games, and given our goal to win the series, the leadership's decision was justified."
Samson, who scored 57 runs in the match, credited his experience as an IPL captain for understanding such decisions and highlighted the significance of communication between players and the leadership group.
He stated, "I’ve faced similar situations as an IPL franchise captain, so I can relate. Communication is vital in these scenarios."
Samson mentioned that he had multiple discussions with Gautam Gambhir during the England T20I series and prior to the current series, emphasizing that leadership often involves making difficult choices rather than popular ones.
He said, "Talking with GG was crucial. We had extensive discussions during the England series and before this one. Making tough calls isn’t easy; opting for the popular choice is simpler."
Samson also addressed how he copes with criticism and outside noise, admitting that while he tries to avoid distractions, comments can still affect players.
He explained, "I attempt to disconnect from the internet, but sometimes it reconnects, and I see comments from senior players. I believe I’ve matured enough to handle it."
He added, "Initially, it can be disheartening; I’m not a machine, and we aren’t robots."
Samson acknowledged that criticism does impact players but stressed the importance of maintaining focus on preparation and self-belief.
He remarked, "It does affect me; I can’t deny that. However, I remind myself of who I am and what I need to accomplish."
He credited India's World Cup victory for helping him manage pressure and maintain confidence in his game.
Samson stated, "If I dwell on negativity, I wouldn’t be able to play freely; I’d hesitate before every shot. Instead, I remind myself that my international career has been fulfilling, and I’m grateful for it. The World Cup experience has been beneficial too."
Discussing India's aggressive T20 batting strategy, he noted that the team has adhered to a successful approach over recent years.
He said, "We are the world champions now, and we have a successful format and strategy that we’ve followed for the past few years. We focus on watching the ball and maximizing our output during the power play."
Samson concluded by acknowledging that failures are part of the game, and players must continue to support their approach.
He stated, "As an Indian cricketer, facing failures is challenging, but my experience helps me stay confident and maintain a high strike rate despite the noise."
