Sanju Samson Emerges as Potential Successor for T20I Captaincy
Gautam Gambhir Supports Samson's Candidacy
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, is reportedly advocating for Sanju Samson to replace Suryakumar Yadav as the next captain for T20 internationals. However, a recent report indicates that the BCCI selectors are hesitant to appoint either Samson or Ishan Kishan due to concerns about their long-term consistency. This leaves Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma as the primary candidates to succeed Yadav. Gambhir has expressed some doubts regarding Iyer, with whom he collaborated during the Kolkata Knight Riders' successful IPL 2024 season. There were speculations that Iyer felt overshadowed by Gambhir's mentorship during that championship run.
Upcoming BCCI Meeting to Discuss Leadership
Leadership Transition on the Horizon?
The anticipated change in T20I leadership is set to be a key agenda item at the upcoming BCCI governing committee meeting. Sources suggest that Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan are all in the running for the captaincy. The Indian team is scheduled to play seven matches, including two in Ireland on June 26 and 28, followed by five in England from July 1 to July 11, under a new captain.
Despite leading India to a historic third T20 World Cup victory in his last role, Suryakumar Yadav may be on the verge of losing his captaincy. Following Rohit Sharma's retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup, Yadav took over the leadership role. Under his guidance, India has maintained an impressive record, winning every bilateral series and tournament they have participated in, including the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the Asia Cup in 2025. Yadav has led India to 42 victories out of 52 T20Is, achieving a remarkable win percentage of 84%.
However, since assuming the captaincy, Yadav's batting performance has seen a decline. He has accumulated only 932 runs at an average of 25.88 and a strike rate of 152.03 over 45 matches since July 2024, with just six half-centuries to his name. After being a prolific scorer for the Mumbai Indians, Yadav also faced challenges during the 2026 IPL season, managing only 270 runs in 13 innings.
