Sanju Samson Emerges as a Strong Contender for T20I Captaincy
Sanju Samson's Rising Profile in Cricket
Sanju Samson, the former captain of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has garnered attention for his impressive performance and growing maturity as a batsman. This has led Ravi Shastri, a former coach of the Indian cricket team, to suggest that Samson could be a viable candidate for the T20I captaincy of the national team. Just two months ago, Suryakumar Yadav successfully led India to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup held at home. During the tournament, Samson was recognized as the "Player of the Tournament," amassing 321 runs across five innings, which included three consecutive half-centuries from the final against New Zealand to a pivotal Super Eight match against the West Indies.
Ravi Shastri's Endorsement of Samson
Shastri expressed his views during an interview with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review, stating, "As we approach the next T20 World Cup in 2028, India may seek a new captain depending on Suryakumar's performance in the coming years. However, Sanju Samson has positioned himself as a leader due to his past experiences with the Rajasthan Royals." He emphasized that Samson's explosive batting makes him a crucial player in the lineup. "I believe this is just the beginning of what we can expect from Sanju in the next few years," he added.
Samson has led the Rajasthan Royals for five IPL seasons, including a runners-up finish in 2022. Currently, he is in exceptional form in international cricket, and during this IPL season, he has continued to excel with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), scoring 430 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 53.75 and a strike rate of 169.29, which includes two centuries and a fifty. In total, Samson has accumulated 797 runs in 21 innings this year in T20 cricket, with an average of 46.88 and a strike rate of 177.50, featuring two hundreds and four fifties.
While Samson's consistency has been a topic of debate in the past, Shastri believes that this concern has been addressed by his current performance, which reflects a newfound maturity. "He has effectively silenced the critics. There was always potential, but people were often let down when he didn't fully utilize it," Shastri remarked. "However, this season, following his outstanding performance in the T20 World Cup where he played a pivotal role in crucial matches, his growth and maturity in the IPL make him a strong candidate for future leadership roles," he concluded.
