Sangram Singh's Remarkable MMA Journey

New Delhi, April 9: In a sport often dominated by younger athletes, veteran MMA fighter Sangram Singh is proving that age is just a number, one match at a time.

Competing at the bustling Tigre Sports Club Stadium in Buenos Aires, the 40-year-old grappler showcased an impressive performance, defeating French fighter Florian Coudier in a mere one minute and 45 seconds.

This victory not only marked his third consecutive win in mixed martial arts across various continents but also made him the first Indian to secure an MMA victory in Argentina.

For Sangram, this win transcended mere statistics. He expressed, “It feels rewarding because when you represent your country abroad, you carry your entire culture with you. There’s a sense of responsibility and pressure, but if you represent it well, it benefits everyone involved.”

However, the path to this triumph was not without its challenges. Just three weeks prior to the fight, his initial opponent withdrew due to an injury, forcing Sangram to adapt to an unfamiliar competitor. With limited knowledge about Coudier's fighting style, his preparation relied heavily on instinct and flexibility.

“When your opponent changes, everything shifts,” Sangram noted. “We had trained for someone else and were unaware of his strengths or weaknesses.”

During the match, this uncertainty became evident. Coudier's speed and precise kicks posed early difficulties, with one strike landing on Sangram's ribs and another aimed at his knees. Nevertheless, the seasoned wrestler leaned on his extensive experience to regain control.

“He was quick. His punches lacked power, but his kicks were strong,” Sangram remarked. “Once I understood his strategy, my wrestling background helped me.”

The bout also had a personal dimension. The younger French fighter had previously questioned Sangram's age, suggesting that MMA was “not a sport for veterans.” Sangram chose to remain silent then but delivered a powerful response in the cage.

“After winning, I told him — it may not be a veteran’s sport, but it’s not for kids either,” Sangram said with a grin.

Sangram's victory in Argentina completes an impressive hat-trick of international wins, following earlier successes in Tbilisi and Amsterdam. Each match has been quick, decisive, and emblematic of a late-career resurgence that defies traditional sporting timelines.

A former Commonwealth heavyweight wrestling champion, Sangram credits his longevity not to shortcuts but to a disciplined lifestyle rooted in simplicity. As a strict vegetarian, his regimen combines traditional Indian practices with unwavering consistency.

“I practice yoga, pranayama, and Surya Namaskar. I consume milk, ghee, and keep my meals uncomplicated,” he shared. “I eat only twice a day and remain connected to my roots.”

Even during extensive travel, his commitment remains unbroken.

“On the flight to Argentina, I continued my workouts — push-ups and breathing exercises. These practices keep you engaged and alive,” he explained.

For Sangram, age is neither a hindrance nor an excuse; it serves as a measure of consistency.

“If you’re not practicing, age will matter. But if you stay prepared and disciplined, it might not,” he stated. “Continuity is key.”

In a career marked by resilience, Sangram Singh's latest victory signifies more than just another win. It serves as a testament that determination, discipline, and self-belief can transcend time, proving that experience can be the most formidable weapon in the cage.
