Exciting Home Debut for Samaleswari SC

New Delhi [India], November 4: Samaleswari SC is gearing up for their inaugural home match against the formidable Dempo SC in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 season. The match is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Rourkela.

In their first-ever match, Samaleswari SC put up a commendable fight, narrowly losing 2-3 to former I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC in Kozhikode, conceding a goal in the dying moments of the game.

Argentine striker Pereyra Diaz was a standout player, consistently challenging the goalkeeper and successfully converting a late penalty. Winger Sahil Harijan also made significant contributions with his dynamic runs and ability to create scoring opportunities.

Head coach Abdul Azim Siddique emphasized the importance of hosting IFL matches in Rourkela, stating it will provide a crucial platform for nurturing local talent in Odisha. He expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity, noting that many players previously had to travel to Kolkata or other states to showcase their skills.

“I am thrilled that the IFL is taking place in Rourkela, as it allows local talent to shine. Our squad includes 10 players from Odisha, including five from the Maa Samaleswari Sports Academy in Sambalpur, along with local talents like Vicky Oram and Roshan Panna,” said Siddique.

Discussing the balance of his team, Siddique mentioned the inclusion of five foreign players, two of whom have international experience, alongside 14 players with national team experience. He believes that playing home-and-away matches is essential for the growth of football in the region.

Midfielder Kiyam Amarjit Singh, who captained India in the U-17 FIFA World Cup, echoed the coach's sentiments, urging local fans to support the team during their home debut. He highlighted the significance of having the IFL in Rourkela and the opportunity for fans to witness local players competing alongside international signings.

Dempo SC arrives in Odisha following a thrilling 1-0 victory over FC Bengaluru United, secured by a last-minute header from Ghanaian defender Uzziel Yaw Asomaning Budu. Despite dominating possession, Dempo had to wait until stoppage time to clinch the win, showcasing their determination.

Head coach Samir Naik is focused on improving their finishing while respecting the capabilities of Samaleswari SC. He acknowledged the competitive nature of the league and the potential of their opponents, who demonstrated resilience in their opening match.

Naik stated, “We played well in our first game, maintaining good possession and creating chances. We know we can enhance our goal conversion rate, and I trust our players to improve with each match.”

As both teams prepare for this exciting encounter, the match promises to be a thrilling contest, with Samaleswari SC eager to secure their first points and Dempo SC looking to build on their opening victory.
