Saina Nehwal Envisions a Bright Future for Pickleball in India
Saina Nehwal's Support for Pickleball
New Delhi, March 14: Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal is optimistic about the future of pickleball in India, as the sport continues to gain traction nationwide.
The former world number one in badminton serves as the brand ambassador for India's inaugural CXO Pickleball League, initiated by RJ Anmol. This league combines elements of business, fitness, and networking for corporate leaders and is set to expand into cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru.
During the CXO Pickleball League event in New Delhi, Nehwal expressed her delight in remaining connected to sports following her retirement from badminton earlier this year.
“I have officially retired. Last year, I discussed with Anmol his vision for a Pickleball League. We had conversations prior to my retirement, and I’m thrilled to be involved in a sport again. The CXO Pickleball League has been successful, especially in Mumbai, and I believe it will thrive in Delhi as well. Many players are eager to participate. I love watching sports and matches. It’s fantastic to see pickleball gaining popularity in our country, with numerous individuals taking part. For those looking to compete, this league will be immensely beneficial,” she stated.
In recent years, pickleball has experienced significant growth in India, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the emergence of various leagues across the nation.
“Many are approaching it competitively. The proliferation of leagues will encourage active participation throughout the year. Maintaining health is crucial for aspiring champions. A focus on fitness and nutrition will pave the way for success,” Nehwal added.
The CXO Pickleball League, established by RJ Anmol, is recognized as one of India's premier pickleball leagues, and Nehwal has high hopes for its future.
Regarding her role as the league's brand ambassador, Nehwal shared, “I had previously done a podcast with Anmol, and we became friends. He later envisioned starting a league and believed my involvement as a sportsperson would resonate well with pickleball, so he reached out to me.”
Nehwal also addressed rumors about her potential political career, clarifying that she does not intend to engage in active politics anytime soon.
“I have been associated with the BJP since 2020, participating in events focused on women's empowerment and sports. I support them wherever needed. However, I have not actively entered politics. Having just retired from sports, my goal is to stay connected to the sports community and promote sports in India. We’ll see how perspectives evolve over the years. If it’s meant to be, I may enter politics in the future,” she concluded.
