Sachin Tendulkar's Key Role in MS Dhoni's Captaincy Journey
The Transition of Leadership in Indian Cricket
Following two challenging terms as captain of the Indian cricket team, Sachin Tendulkar was presented with another opportunity to lead in 2007 by the BCCI. After a disappointing showing in the 2007 ODI World Cup, a leadership change was imminent, leading to Rahul Dravid's resignation in September. MS Dhoni, who was at the helm during the T20 World Cup, was appointed as the new captain. However, he was not the initial choice for the role. The BCCI approached Sachin once more, asking him to take the reins again, as he had served as Dravid's deputy during the ICC event.
Instead of accepting the captaincy, Sachin made a significant decision for the future of the team by endorsing Dhoni's leadership. Under Sachin's captaincy, India achieved 4 victories in 25 Test matches and 23 wins in 73 ODIs. "I was offered the captaincy in England, but I recognized that we had a capable leader in Dhoni, who was still relatively new. I had numerous discussions with him, especially while fielding at first slip, where I would seek his opinions. Although Rahul was the captain, I valued Dhoni's insights, which were always balanced and mature," Sachin shared during an Infosys event in 2022.
He emphasized that effective captaincy involves anticipating the opposition's moves. "Good captaincy requires strategic thinking. You can't expect to take 10 wickets in 10 balls; it requires planning. Ultimately, the scoreboard is what counts, and I saw those qualities in Dhoni, which is why I recommended him," he added.
Sachin's recommendation proved to be a pivotal moment for both the BCCI and Team India. Dhoni assumed the white-ball captaincy in 2007 and succeeded Anil Kumble as the Test captain a year later. Under his leadership, India reached the pinnacle of the ICC Test rankings for the first time in 2009.
ICC Titles Achieved Under MS Dhoni
In 2011, Dhoni led India to its first ODI World Cup victory in 28 years. Two years later, he guided the team to a Champions Trophy title. Dhoni continued to captain the Indian white-ball team until 2016, finishing his Test captaincy with 27 wins. Virat Kohli later surpassed this record with 40 wins. Under Dhoni, India secured 110 victories out of 200 ODIs, a feat unmatched by any other Indian captain.
Dhoni is also recognized for nurturing Virat Kohli, who was poised to take over as the all-format captain upon Dhoni's retirement. Dhoni made a surprising exit from Test cricket during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He stepped down as India's white-ball captain in January 2017, participating in the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 ODI World Cup under Kohli's captaincy. Over a year after his last international appearance, Dhoni announced his retirement in August 2020 but continues to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
