Sachin Tendulkar Shares Insights on His Favorite Captains and Leadership Experiences
Tendulkar's Favorite Captains Revealed
In a recent Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' session, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar expressed his admiration for Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni, naming them as his top favorite captains. Reflecting on his own journey as the captain of the Indian Test team, he shared insights into the challenges and honors that came with the role.
Tendulkar, who led India in 25 Test matches between 1996 and 2000, acknowledged the significant responsibilities of captaincy, stating, "It was a great honor to lead the team. However, I didn’t always have the liberty to select my team entirely on my own." He noted that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has evolved into a more professional organization compared to the 1990s, a time when Indian cricket faced considerable difficulties.
Challenges During Captaincy Tenure
His captaincy period was marked by struggles, culminating in his resignation in March 2000 after a home series loss to South Africa. Tendulkar later turned down an opportunity to reclaim the captaincy in 2007, which ultimately went to Dhoni.
The 53-year-old cricketer also commended Temba Bavuma for his leadership of the South African team, especially following their victory in the 2025 World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. Tendulkar remarked, "I truly admire Temba Bavuma’s spirit. He has led from the front and delivered remarkable results for South African cricket. South Africa winning an ICC title is great for world cricket!"
A Lighthearted Moment
In a humorous exchange, Tendulkar was asked about his experiences bowling to legendary batters from his era, including Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting. He quipped, "I enjoyed bowling to all of them because I got all of them out! Haha!"
When discussing his interactions with Sanju Samson leading up to India's 2026 Men's T20 World Cup victory, Tendulkar playfully referenced a popular Malayalam phrase, saying, "Nee po mone Dinesha!" which translates to a light-hearted dismissal. Samson had credited Tendulkar for providing crucial guidance during a challenging phase in his career, which helped him excel in the tournament.
Tendulkar's Legendary Career
Regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history, Tendulkar represented India from 1989 to 2013. He holds the record for the most international centuries, with 100 to his name, including 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs. Additionally, he has amassed the highest runs in both formats, totaling 15,921 in Tests and 18,426 in ODIs.
