Ryan Williams: A Journey of Pride and Determination in Indian Football
Ryan Williams Embraces His Role in Indian Football
Indian footballer Ryan Williams expressed that representing India is a source of immense pride for him, emphasizing his commitment to elevate the national team's position in the FIFA rankings.
Williams, who is only the second player to change nationality to play for India after Arata Izumi, shared that his journey has been shaped by experiences in Australia, England, and India.
In an interview, he highlighted the significance of donning the Indian jersey, stating it symbolizes the hopes of 1.4 billion people and holds deep meaning for his family.
He remarked, "Pride is the first word that comes to mind. To represent India is special, especially considering the vast number of people I represent. Playing football for India is a joy that's hard to articulate."
Originally from Australia, Ryan transitioned to England, where he played for clubs like Portsmouth, Fulham, Oxford United, and Rotherham United before returning to the A-League to join Bengaluru FC in 2023.
He also played for Perth Glory in the 2022-23 season after several years in England.
With a mother from Mumbai, Williams renounced his Australian citizenship to qualify for international play with India.
He made a remarkable debut for the Blue Tigers, scoring just four minutes after entering the field against Hong Kong in an AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier, marking the fastest goal by a debutant for the Indian men's national team.
Williams expressed that this achievement is incredibly special for his family, and he is eager to contribute to Indian football, aiming to improve the country's FIFA ranking.
Reflecting on his nationality switch, he stated that the decision was straightforward for him, driven by a clear vision of his goals despite skepticism from others.
He noted, "It wasn't a tough choice. I'm determined and knew what I wanted to achieve."
The 32-year-old shared that obtaining an Indian passport took nearly two years, during which he faced numerous challenges but remained focused on his objective.
He recounted, "Many told me it was impossible, but I proved them wrong by securing my passport and representing India."
Williams credited his diverse experiences in Australia and England for preparing him to face the challenges of playing for India.
He said, "I've been fortunate to learn from various managers and styles of football, which has been invaluable."
His persistence has been a key factor in overcoming obstacles throughout his career.
He admitted, "There were times I considered returning to Australia, but my determination has paid off with my Indian passport."
Regarding his recent collaboration with JSW Sports, Williams expressed pride in being the first footballer on their roster.
He stated, "I'm thrilled about this opportunity. JSW Sports is a major player in elite talent management, and being their first footballer is a badge of honor for me."
Having been with Bengaluru FC for three years, he believes this partnership will allow him to concentrate on his performance while JSW Sports enhances his profile and promotes Indian football.
Since joining Bengaluru in 2023, Williams has made 50 appearances in the Indian Super League (ISL), netting 14 goals and providing four assists. In the 2023-24 season, he played 16 matches, scoring three goals, followed by 22 appearances, seven goals, and four assists in 2024-25. In the 2025-26 season, he made 12 appearances and scored four goals.
He concluded, "JSW enables me to focus entirely on my game while they handle other aspects, helping to grow both my profile and Indian football."
Williams added, "Our shared goal is to expand the reach of football in India, increasing visibility and ultimately enhancing the level of talent."
