Koeman's Departure from Dutch National Team

Amsterdam [Netherlands], July 1: Ronald Koeman has officially announced that he will not be renewing his contract as the head coach of the Netherlands national football team once it concludes.

The 63-year-old made this declaration just a day after the Netherlands faced elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Dutch team, known as the Oranje, was ousted in the Round of 32 after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Morocco. This decision marks the end of Koeman's second tenure with the national squad.

Koeman expressed, “This was not an easy choice, especially after working so closely with this coaching staff and these players for an extended period. I am thankful and want to convey my heartfelt appreciation for the commitment shown by everyone involved with Oranje during both of my terms as head coach.”

He added, “It is certainly disappointing that our World Cup journey has concluded so soon. However, once I have had the chance to reflect, I will primarily cherish the fantastic collaboration and the numerous memorable moments we experienced together. I want to thank everyone who played a part in that. I believe it is now the right time for me to focus more on my family, including my wife, children, and grandchildren. This feels like the most natural decision at this moment.”

Morocco, the African powerhouse, kept their World Cup aspirations alive with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout against the Netherlands after the match ended in a 1-1 draw following extra time in a captivating Round of 32 clash on Monday (local time).

In the shootout, Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville all missed their penalties, leading to Morocco's 3-2 win after the last-32 match in Monterrey concluded 1-1 after extra time.
