Rohit Yadav Celebrates Asian Games Success Amid Neeraj Chopra's Absence
Rohit Yadav Reflects on Asian Games Performance
Indian javelin thrower Rohit Yadav expressed his joy over India's achievements at the Asian Games, particularly in the absence of star athlete Neeraj Chopra. He shared insights about his interactions with Neeraj and a memorable jersey exchange with Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage, who clinched the gold medal.
Yadav and fellow javelin thrower Yashvir Singh stepped up remarkably, securing a double podium finish. Rumesh dominated the event with a remarkable throw of 88.55 meters, following his gold at the Commonwealth Games, where he narrowly outperformed Neeraj. In the Asian Games final, Yashvir achieved a personal best of 85.72 meters to earn silver, while Rohit secured bronze with a throw of 84.35 meters.
After their success, Rohit commented on their performance, stating, "It's fantastic that we brought home two medals at the Asian Games. We achieved this last time as well, and it feels great to do it again. Yashvir was in excellent form, and while I didn't hit my best throws, I'm thrilled we contributed to our country's medal tally. Our young javelin athletes are on the rise and will excel on the world stage."
Post-competition, both athletes received encouraging messages from Neeraj, who has been instrumental in establishing Asian dominance in javelin, inspiring talents like Rumesh, Yashvir, and Pakistan's Olympic medalist Arshad Nadeem.
Regarding Neeraj's support, Rohit remarked, "Neeraj bhai has achieved everything in this sport. He hopes that future athletes can also win medals at the world level, and we are determined to meet that expectation."
Rohit also spoke about his friendship with Rumesh, who has been impressive this season with throws in the late 80s and early 90s. He shared that it was Rumesh's idea to swap jerseys, saying, "He suggested we exchange shirts, and I gladly agreed. We've been friends for years and have competed against each other."
Rumesh has dominated the javelin scene, winning 13 out of 14 events and achieving a season-best throw of 92.62 meters at the Rome Diamond League on June 4, 2026. His victories at the Commonwealth and Asian Games have solidified his status as a rising star in Asian javelin.
Rohit mentioned that Neeraj had motivated him and Yashvir before the competition, emphasizing the importance of focusing on performance rather than solely on medals. "He encouraged us to give our best, and the medals would follow. It was a valuable experience, and we plan to consult him again for our upcoming competitions," he concluded.
