Rohit Sharma Welcomes New Teams in 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup
Rohit Sharma's Enthusiasm for T20 World Cup Expansion
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 25: Former Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma expressed his excitement regarding the addition of new teams for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, highlighting the sport's global growth. With a total of 20 teams participating, Rohit noted that this expansion is a clear indication of cricket's increasing popularity.
“I’m quite impressed to see Italy included; it signifies the sport's expanding reach. We aspire for cricket to flourish and welcome the influx of new teams. It’s fantastic to have 20 teams involved. The sport is undeniably growing,” Rohit remarked during the announcement of the T20 World Cup schedule.
He expressed hope for more teams from regions like Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, including Japan, where he has friends who are passionate about competitive cricket. “They are eager to compete against established teams. The sport has made significant strides in the last few years, and I believe it will continue to improve,” he added.
Discussing India's group in the upcoming tournament, Rohit emphasized that every team poses a challenge. “No team can be underestimated anymore. You can’t enter a tournament thinking it will be easy; all teams are now playing competitive matches throughout the year. You must be on your game from the very first ball, as any team can surprise you,” he stated.
“All teams are closely observing each other’s strategies and weaknesses, which means they prepare thoroughly,” he noted.
In Group A, India will face the USA and their long-time rival Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, alongside the Netherlands and Namibia.
Group B includes Sri Lanka, the 2021 champions Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Oman.
Group C features two-time champions England and the West Indies, along with newcomers Italy and Asian teams Bangladesh and Nepal.
Group D comprises New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, Canada, and the UAE.
Rohit shared his aspirations for India’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, stating, “Naturally, I want India to reach the finals. What’s happened in the past is behind us. Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) expressed his feelings about Australia defeating us in the same stadium. I would love to see India triumph in the finals against any opponent; the opposition doesn’t matter to me,” he concluded.
The 2026 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
