Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket

New Delhi [India] May 7: Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India, has officially declared his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of a significant era in his international career. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its appreciation and best wishes for the seasoned player following his announcement.

The 38-year-old cricketer shared the news on his Instagram account on Wednesday.

In a post on their X handle, the BCCI stated, “Thank you, Captain! An era in whites comes to a close as @ImRo45 bids farewell to Test cricket. He will continue to lead India in ODIs. We are proud of you, Hitman.”

Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 and played 67 matches for India, accumulating 4,301 runs. His red-ball career features 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a personal best of 212 runs against South Africa in 2019.

As a captain in the longest format, Rohit led India in 24 Test matches, achieving 12 victories and suffering 9 losses. Despite facing criticism for India's performance during the recent Australian tour, where the team did not qualify for the World Test Championship Final, he successfully guided the team to the final of the 2023 edition at The Oval.

While stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit confirmed his availability for One Day Internationals, where he remains a crucial member of India's squad. His departure from Test cricket signifies the end of an era, as Indian cricket says goodbye to one of its most graceful stroke-makers in the format.

Rohit boasts an impressive home Test record, scoring 2,535 runs in 34 matches at an average of 51.73, including 10 centuries and eight fifties in 55 innings, with a top score of 212.

In away matches, he has accumulated 1,644 runs in 31 Tests at an average of 31.01, with two centuries and 10 fifties in 57 innings, and a best score of 127. At neutral venues, he has scored 122 runs in two Tests at an average of 30.50, with a highest score of 43.

Rohit's best performance in overseas conditions came during the Pataudi Trophy against England in 2021-22, where he was India's top scorer with 368 runs in four matches and eight innings at an average of 52.57, including one century and two fifties. His score of 127 remains his only century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries.

He captained India in 24 Tests, securing 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws, achieving a win percentage of exactly 50% in this format.
