Federer's Exciting Return to the Australian Open
Melbourne, Australia - January 13: Tennis icon Roger Federer is set to return to the Australian Open in 2026, participating in an exhibition match alongside fellow ATP No. 1 members, including Andre Agassi, Patrick Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt, as reported by a sports news outlet.
The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, with the main draw of the Australian Open commencing on January 18.
Federer, a six-time champion at the Australian Open, expressed his excitement in a press release, stating, “It feels like ages since I first called it the ‘Happy Slam,’ and it still brings a smile to my face when I recall all the wonderful moments I’ve experienced here.”
He reminisced about the emotions he felt on Rod Laver Arena, saying, “From lifting the ‘Norman’ [the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup] six times to the honor of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, and the thrill of competing against my fiercest rivals, the love and support from Australian fans has always been overwhelming.”
Federer added, “Winning the AO in 2017 is one of my most cherished Grand Slam memories, and following it up with another victory in 2018 was a dream come true in Melbourne. I’m eagerly looking forward to returning to the AO and creating more unforgettable moments with the Aussie fans.”
Tournament director Craig Tiley shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited to introduce this unique AO Opening Ceremony. While the Australian Open is known for its innovation, we also honor a proud 120-year history filled with some of the sport’s greatest champions.”
He continued, “This inaugural Opening Ceremony will kick off the new tennis season in a spectacular way. I can’t wait to see Roger back on Rod Laver Arena, along with other legends like Andre, Pat, and Lleyton. I know fans across Australia will be just as thrilled to share this moment with him.”
At 44 years old, Federer last played at the Australian Open in 2020 against his longtime rival Novak Djokovic before announcing his retirement in 2022.
