Rodri Praises Cristiano Ronaldo as He Bids Farewell to World Cup Dreams
Rodri's Tribute to Ronaldo
Dallas [US], July 7: After Spain secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, Manchester City midfielder Rodri expressed admiration for Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently played his final match in the tournament. Rodri referred to Ronaldo as "an incredible example for future generations."
Ronaldo's sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment, as he left the tournament without the coveted trophy, despite scoring 11 goals in 27 matches since his debut in 2006. He confirmed prior to the match that this would be his last World Cup, marking a bittersweet end to his illustrious career.
Rodri remarked, "We are discussing one of the greatest players in football history. His mentality and understanding of the game are remarkable. His country should be immensely proud of him."
A late goal from Mikel Merino in the 91st minute dashed Ronaldo's hopes of lifting the World Cup title.
In his final World Cup, Ronaldo netted three goals in five matches, making history as the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups. He also broke the drought for knockout stage goals for Portugal, solidifying his status as the nation's all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
Later, in an interview with TV Espana, Rodri analyzed the match, noting that it was determined by minor details, as both teams aimed to control possession. He acknowledged the need for improvement moving forward.
"Spain and Portugal are quite similar teams, both wanting to dominate the ball and showcase their personalities. The match was always going to hinge on small details, which it did. The goal came from one of the few times we found space inside. We can enhance that for future matches," he stated.
"There is still much to achieve, and we can improve significantly. It's crucial to rest well, as physical fitness is vital. We are not finished yet, but we should feel satisfied," he added.
Rodri emphasized the importance of patience against a well-organized Portuguese defense that excels in counter-attacks. He noted, "We understood we couldn't push too many players forward, as they could exploit us on the break. We managed to read the game well, except for a few instances due to their high-quality players. I would award the MVP to Mikel (Oyarzabal) for his impactful performance, especially coming in under pressure."
