Martinez Confirms Departure from Portugal National Team

Dallas [US], July 7: Following Portugal's elimination in the FIFA World Cup round of 16, manager Roberto Martinez announced his departure from the national team, emphasizing the need for "a new voice and a new leader."

Martinez, who took the reins in 2023, was unable to secure a World Cup victory for Portugal, as a late goal from Mikel Merino dashed the hopes of both the team and the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, who aimed to lift the coveted trophy.

In a statement reported by The Athletics, Martinez remarked, "This marks the end of a cycle. It's crucial to introduce a new voice and leadership."

He added, "It wasn't predetermined that I would leave after this tournament. My goal was to win the World Cup, and since I didn't achieve that, it makes no sense for me to continue."

Martinez reflected on his tenure, stating, "I will carry the memories with me and hope that Portugal remembers the three and a half years I spent as head coach fondly. It was a remarkable experience for me."

The match was filled with scoring opportunities for both teams, but it was substitutes Ferran Torres and Merino who made the difference for Spain in stoppage time, effectively ending Ronaldo's World Cup journey across six tournaments.

The game began with Lamine Yamal's challenge on Joao Neves, which sparked frustration from Martinez. In the fourth minute, Mikel Oyarzabal attempted a shot, but it was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Joao Cancelo also tried from distance, while Spain maintained possession and created chances, with Oyarzabal missing another opportunity.

In the 11th minute, Bruno Fernandes set up Cristiano Ronaldo, who skillfully maneuvered past Aymeric Laporte but saw his shot saved by Unai Simon, resulting in a corner.

Yamal's left-footed attempt and a rebound from Alex Baena in the 16th minute were quickly dealt with by Portugal. A free kick awarded to Portugal in the 21st minute failed to yield any results as they headed into a hydration break.

Spain continued to control the game until Ronaldo attempted an acrobatic shot, which was thwarted. Pedro Neto's cross found Joao Felix, but Ronaldo's follow-up was again saved by Simon.

In the 39th minute, Joao Felix suffered an injury after colliding with an advertising board, requiring medical attention. Just before halftime, Nuno Mendes struck from the edge of the box, but his shot hit the crossbar after deflecting off Pedro Porro.

During added time, both Ronaldo and Yamal had chances, but the score remained 0-0. Spain held nearly 55% possession, with eight shots compared to Portugal's five, and 11 touches in the opposition box against Portugal's four, showcasing a slight edge for the 2010 champions.

After the break, Ronaldo was fouled by Olmo, leading to a free kick that Fernandes sent directly into Simon's hands. In the 59th minute, Ronaldo had a chance when Felix set him up, but his volley went wide.

The deadlock persisted as Fernandes squandered another opportunity, hitting the side netting despite the power behind his shot.

In stoppage time, Mikel Merino sealed Portugal's fate with a brilliant goal. Following a free kick, Fabian Ruiz found Ferran Torres, who assisted Merino for a precise finish into the bottom corner.

Bernardo Silva missed a crucial chance, and another free kick from Portugal went well off target, resulting in Portugal's exit from the tournament and concluding Ronaldo's World Cup journey.
