Their intelligent players exploit spaces, control the game, and know when to quicken the pace, making them a formidable opponent,” he added.
Fowler pointed out that Spain's primary challenge will be to limit Messi's influence on the game, a task England struggled with during their semi-final encounter.
“Against Messi, it’s crucial to deny him space. If he finds room, he can create opportunities and score. We saw how he turned the game against England once he found those gaps. Spain must be defensively astute, quickly closing off those channels to disrupt Argentina's rhythm,” Fowler explained.
When asked about Spain's defensive strategy against Messi, Fowler noted that a flexible approach is essential, as there is no universal solution.
“You need a mix of strategies. There will be times to press high and times to stay compact. You can’t stick to one tactic for 90 minutes against a player like Messi. He will always find space, so Spain needs a solid plan to manage the areas he prefers to exploit. If they can minimize those opportunities, they will significantly hinder Argentina's chances,” he stated.
