Mullanpur, May 26: After facing significant criticism and battling injuries, Riyan Parag has successfully led the Rajasthan Royals to the IPL playoffs in his first full season as captain.

The 24-year-old cricketer from Guwahati has proven his worth by guiding the team to a thrilling playoff spot. The Royals are set to compete against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 27.

Since joining the franchise in 2019, Parag has often been a topic of discussion, whether due to his candid nature, fluctuating performances, or various controversies.

However, Royals' head coach Kumar Sangakkara has staunchly supported the young captain following the team's qualification.

“Riyan has faced unprecedented criticism over the past seven years. He is undoubtedly the right leader for this franchise,” Sangakkara stated.

After several lackluster seasons, Parag had a breakout IPL season in 2024, amassing 573 runs at a strike rate nearing 150 after being elevated to the number four position. This performance earned him a call-up to the national team later that year.

Unfortunately, a chronic shoulder injury that required surgery interrupted his progress and sidelined him from the national squad.

Despite this setback, the Rajasthan Royals continued to support him, eventually appointing him as captain after Sanju Samson's exit, despite competition from senior players like Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ravindra Jadeja.

This season has also presented challenges for Parag. A rough start and backlash from a viral vaping incident in the dressing room heightened the pressure on him, especially during a late-season slump for the team.

Nevertheless, Parag made a strong comeback in the latter half of the tournament, although a hamstring injury caused him to miss two matches.

He returned for a crucial final league match against the Mumbai Indians, where he made key tactical decisions, such as promoting Jofra Archer in the batting order and later bringing him back to counter a threatening partnership between Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.

After the victory, Parag defended his bold leadership approach.

“I’ve made several brave decisions this season. That’s my leadership style. It’s how I lead in Assam too. You must seize opportunities; it’s not just a gamble,” he remarked.

Coming from a sports-oriented family, with his father being a first-class cricketer and his mother a national-level swimmer, Parag has always been seen as a naturally talented player. He was also part of India’s triumphant U-19 World Cup team alongside Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw.

A former support staff member for the India U-19 team described Parag as “misunderstood” yet deeply dedicated.

“He may not fit the traditional mold, but his work ethic is exceptional. He is a unique cricketer who has yet to fully tap into his potential,” the coach commented.

As the Rajasthan Royals gear up for a crucial playoff match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday, Parag has a chance to lead his team further into the tournament and continue to silence his critics.
