Rishabh Pant's New Role as Senior Player

India's assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, emphasized the importance of Rishabh Pant stepping up as a senior player, even after KL Rahul took over as the vice-captain for the Test team. The coaching staff is looking for Pant to embody the qualities of a role model as he prepares to play his 50th Test against Afghanistan.

Having accumulated 3,476 runs in 49 Tests with an impressive average of 42.91, Pant's aggressive batting style has been pivotal in securing victories for India. However, he has also faced scrutiny for occasionally taking excessive risks.

Ten Doeschate remarked, 'Leadership doesn't solely rely on titles. We expect him to adapt his game to fit various situations. Rishabh has expressed no issues regarding the vice-captaincy change. Our discussions have clarified his commitment to improving his performance.'

The assistant coach also addressed the need for stability in the No. 3 batting position, suggesting that either Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal should be given a consistent opportunity in this critical role.

'Frequent changes in that position are not ideal. We need to evaluate the current players and possibly settle on one,' he stated. 'It's a challenging and vital spot to bat in. Both Dev and Sai are in excellent form, with Dev having a strong domestic record and Sai excelling in the IPL. Whoever is selected will receive a fair chance, although the scheduling makes it tricky,' he added.

Ten Doeschate also confirmed that Mohammed Siraj is performing well and has recovered from a shoulder injury scare sustained during the IPL. 'Siraj bowled yesterday and appeared to be in great shape,' he noted.

Furthermore, he indicated that Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are likely to be chosen for spin duties, with either Manav Suthar or Harsh Dubey potentially making their debut. 'With nine crucial Tests ahead in the WTC cycle, this is our last opportunity to reach the final, so we will select our combinations accordingly,' he concluded.
