Rishabh Pant's Challenging Season and Future Prospects

Rishabh Pant's inaugural season with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) was far from successful, leading to questions about his future with the team. As the most expensive player in IPL history, Pant's performance fell short of expectations, contributing to the team's 7th place finish under his leadership. The franchise, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, made headlines by acquiring the Indian wicketkeeper-batter for a staggering Rs. 27 Crore during the 2025 mega auction, marking a historic deal in the league.

Unfortunately, Pant's batting statistics reflected a challenging season, as he accumulated only 269 runs across 14 matches, averaging 24.45. His season included a single century and a half-century, with the century occurring in the last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), a game that ultimately resulted in elimination from the tournament. This performance raised concerns about his potential return to the Indian T20I squad, especially given his prolonged struggles in the format.

Under Pant's captaincy, the Delhi Capitals (DC) managed to reach the playoffs just once in four seasons, further fueling doubts about his leadership abilities. Speculation arose regarding LSG's potential decision to relieve him of his captaincy role. However, Goenka has dismissed these rumors, expressing his belief that the 28-year-old will excel in the upcoming 2026 season. In a recent post on X, he stated, "Heading into the season, I had read the speculations around Rishabh Pant's captaincy and smiled. We’ve spent enough time together to know his character and commitment. Have a great season, Cap!"

Earlier in the day, Goenka found himself embroiled in controversy after IPL's inaugural chairman criticized him over comments related to the sale of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) franchises.
