Ricky Ponting Praises India's Dominance in White-Ball Cricket
India's Historic T20 World Cup Victory
In a recent statement, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed his admiration for the current Indian cricket team, asserting that they have emerged as one of the most formidable white-ball teams in history. He attributes this success to their depth, experience, and consistent performance in ICC tournaments over recent years.
India made headlines by becoming the first men's team to defend the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title, triumphing over New Zealand by 96 runs in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This victory also marked India's inaugural T20 World Cup win on home soil.
Ponting reflected on India's impressive track record in ICC white-ball competitions, stating that their achievements in recent years are undeniable.
"It's difficult to dispute that point," Ponting remarked during an ICC Review segment when asked if the current Indian squad is the strongest ever in T20I cricket.
"When you examine their white-ball performance in ICC events over the past five or six years, it’s truly remarkable. Many had already recognized the depth and strength of this Indian team before the tournament began, along with their wealth of experience."
Building a Dominant Squad
Ponting emphasized that India's recent success is the culmination of years spent developing a squad capable of excelling in global tournaments.
"This is an exceptionally strong Indian white-ball team, not limited to just T20s. Winning back-to-back World Cups is a significant achievement," he added.
According to Ponting, the extensive experience of Indian players, gained through both international matches and the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been vital in preparing them for high-pressure situations.
"One aspect that might be overlooked is the sheer amount of cricket these players have participated in, whether at the international level or in the IPL," he noted.
"The IPL matches are just as significant as international games, so this Indian team entered the tournament well-prepared with a great balance and a solid squad."
Learning from Setbacks
Despite their impressive performance, India faced a setback during the Super Eight stage, losing to South Africa by 76 runs in Ahmedabad. However, Ponting believes this defeat served as a crucial wake-up call.
"Winning 12 matches in a row means you're bound to have an off day. I'm glad it happened early; it might have been the shake-up India needed," he remarked.
"They likely learned from that experience and will not take things for granted."
Following the loss, India bounced back strongly, scoring over 250 runs in three of their last four matches, including the semi-final and the final, culminating in another remarkable campaign.
"Perhaps it allowed them to regroup and discuss what matters most to them as a team," Ponting suggested.
"They solidified their strongest playing XI and made few changes towards the end of the tournament."
Crowning Glory
With aggressive batting and a well-rounded bowling attack throughout the knockout stages, India concluded their dominant run with a decisive victory over New Zealand, successfully retaining the T20 World Cup title.
