Richa Ghosh's Heroics Fall Short as India Loses to England by Five Runs in T20 Warm-Up
Thrilling Warm-Up Match Ends in Narrow Defeat for India
In a gripping warm-up match for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 held in Cardiff, Richa Ghosh's outstanding performance was not enough to secure a win for India, as they fell short by five runs against England Women on Wednesday.
England set a challenging target of 172 runs, thanks to Amy Jones' impressive 64 and Nat Sciver-Brunt's quickfire 57 off 45 balls. Danielle Gibson also contributed significantly with a rapid 30 runs off just 12 deliveries, leading England to a total of 171/6 in their allotted overs. Despite Ghosh's remarkable innings of 68 runs from 36 balls, India could only manage 166 runs before being bowled out in 19.5 overs.
India's chase began poorly, losing both openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, early on, leaving the team struggling at 18/2. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's dismissal for 17 further compounded India's woes, as wickets fell regularly, and the team found themselves at a precarious 120/6 in the 16th over.
However, Ghosh refused to give up, launching a fierce counterattack that included nine fours and two sixes. Despite losing two more wickets in the 18th over, Ghosh and Shree Charani managed to score 21 runs off the penultimate over, narrowing the target to 17 runs in the final over.
Ghosh's aggressive approach put pressure on Linsey Smith, who bowled the last over. After hitting a boundary and a six, India needed just six runs from four balls. Unfortunately, Ghosh's innings ended dramatically when she was outsmarted by Smith's delivery, leading to her dismissal. The final wicket fell shortly after, sealing a narrow victory for England.
Earlier, India won the toss and opted to field first. England's innings was bolstered by a solid partnership between Sciver-Brunt and Jones, who combined for 70 runs. Shreyanka Patil was the standout bowler for India, taking 2 wickets for 29 runs.
Despite the loss, India's fighting spirit in the lower order offers a positive takeaway as they gear up for their T20 World Cup 2026 opener against Pakistan on Sunday at Edgbaston.
