RCB Faces DC in IPL Showdown

On April 18 (Saturday), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is competing against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the opening match of a doubleheader at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Although the tournament is still in its early stages, the playoff race is beginning to take shape. The complete schedule for the league phase has been released, but details regarding the dates and locations for the two Qualifier matches and the final remain undisclosed. Interestingly, RCB's captain Rajat Patidar may have inadvertently revealed that the final of IPL 2026 will take place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. During the toss, Patidar mentioned, “Of course, there was a lot of planning behind it. And as you know, this year we have a final at Chinnaswamy, so we have to win all the home matches.”

Traditionally, the final of the IPL is hosted at the home ground of the previous season's champion team. RCB clinched their first IPL title in 2025 after an 18-year wait by defeating Punjab Kings in the final. As the current champions, it is fitting that their home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, is chosen to host the IPL 2026 final. In the previous season, the final was not held at the home ground of the IPL 2024 champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), due to adverse weather conditions and interruptions caused by geopolitical tensions.

Following RCB's victory in IPL 2025, a trophy parade was planned to conclude at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Unfortunately, a tragic stampede occurred near one of the stadium gates, resulting in the loss of 11 lives. Consequently, the venue was deemed unsuitable for hosting matches and has not held significant games for nearly a year. This season, RCB will not play all their home matches at this venue, with two games scheduled at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

In their match against DC, RCB is making history by playing their 100th IPL game at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This marks the first instance of a franchise reaching a century of IPL matches at a single venue. A victory today would also signify their 50th win at this location. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) follow closely, having played 98 games at their home ground, Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
