RCB's Position in IPL 2026

Following the Gujarat Titans' (GT) recent victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 56th match of IPL 2026, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have slipped to the second position in the points table. GT has become the first team to surpass 15 points, currently holding 16 points with a net run rate (NRR) of +0.551. With 8 wins and only 4 losses in their 12 matches, GT has shown remarkable resilience after an initial rough patch, establishing themselves as strong contenders for the title. However, their lead at the top may be short-lived.

RCB has the opportunity to reclaim the top position on Wednesday (May 13) when they face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). A victory in this match would allow RCB to regain the lead.

Path to the Top for RCB

Should RCB triumph over KKR, they will also reach 16 points. Since both teams would have the same points, the team with the superior NRR will take the top spot. Currently, RCB boasts a stronger NRR of +1.103 compared to GT's +0.551. Even a narrow victory against KKR would ensure RCB maintains a better NRR than GT. However, if RCB loses to KKR, NRR will become irrelevant.

The defending champions had previously ascended to the top after a thrilling win against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday (May 10), successfully chasing down a target of 167 runs on the last ball in Raipur. RCB is on the verge of securing a place in the second round, with just one more win likely sufficient for qualification. Like other teams, RCB is also aiming for a top-two finish, which offers the advantage of two chances to qualify for the playoffs. In contrast, teams finishing in third and fourth place must win three consecutive matches to claim the IPL trophy. Apart from the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, all other teams remain in contention for playoff qualification, with no team having secured a spot in the second round yet.
