RCB's Title Defense in IPL 2026

In the upcoming IPL 2026 season, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will strive to defend their title, but former Indian captain Anil Kumble warns that the journey may be challenging for the team led by Rajat Patidar.

During a discussion on JioHotstar, Kumble pointed out the obstacles Patidar will encounter as the captain of the reigning champions. He remarked, "Winning consecutive titles won't be straightforward for Rajat Patidar's RCB. Historically, only CSK and MI have achieved this feat consistently. However, Patidar has shown promise as a captain in his debut season."

Kumble noted that the decision to appoint Patidar as skipper surprised many, as there were expectations for Virat Kohli to continue in that role. Nevertheless, the team management's choice proved beneficial. Patidar, who previously captained Madhya Pradesh and excelled in domestic cricket, has led the team effectively. With heightened expectations this season, Kumble believes Patidar's calm demeanor under pressure will be crucial.

In preparation for the season, RCB has acquired all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer for Rs 7 crore during the IPL mini auction. Iyer, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders last season after a significant Rs 23.75 crore bid in 2025, may not initially feature in the playing XI, according to Kumble.

Kumble expressed, "I doubt Venkatesh Iyer will start in the playing XI. The team will likely stick with the lineup that secured the trophy after 18 years. Devdutt Padikkal, who missed key matches due to injury, should be included as he is in excellent batting form."

He added that Padikkal would take on the impact player role when RCB bowls first, while Suyash Sharma would serve as the bowling impact player when batting first. Kumble emphasized that unless the team opts for an additional batter who can bowl, Iyer may not make the starting lineup, although he remains a valuable asset to the squad.

Regarding the overseas players, Kumble stated, "Romario Shepherd and Tim David must both be in the playing XI. Their ability to finish games is crucial. While there will be discussions about Jacob Bethell's inclusion, Phil Salt is a definite starter. If Hazlewood is fit, he will also start. The remaining overseas spots will be filled by Tim David and Romario Shepherd, strengthening RCB's batting and providing an additional bowling option with Shepherd."
