Ravindra Jadeja's Return to Rajasthan Royals: A Historic IPL Showdown
Exciting IPL Matchup in 2026
The upcoming 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati carries a unique narrative. This game marks the first encounter for Ravindra Jadeja against the five-time champions since his return to the Royals after a 17-year hiatus. Jadeja has made a promising start in his second stint, claiming two wickets in as many matches, contributing to victories over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT). For those unfamiliar, Jadeja was a member of the Royals during the league's inaugural seasons, playing a crucial role in their 2008 title win under Shane Warne's captaincy, which also led to his debut for India a few months later in February 2009.
The Ban That Changed Everything
Ravindra Jadeja's One Season Ban
However, the 2009 season turned out to be Jadeja's last with the Royals, as he missed the 2010 season due to a ban imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This ban was a result of his discussions with the Mumbai Indians (MI), which were deemed a breach of IPL regulations. The governing council concluded that Jadeja's actions warranted a suspension, stating, "The player guidelines laid out by the Governing Council of the IPL are sacrosanct and all players will need to strictly adhere to the same."
Jadeja's suspension remains a unique case in IPL history, as no other player has faced a full season ban for engaging in talks with other franchises, despite such negotiations becoming commonplace. While other players have missed seasons due to various reasons, Jadeja's 2010 absence is the only instance of a complete ban for a season.
Jadeja's Journey Post-Ban
Unprecedented IPL Decision
Since the inception of the IPL, Jadeja has participated in every season except for 2010. He has only missed four matches due to injury in 2022. His ban prevents him from joining the elite group of players, including MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, who have played in all editions of the league prior to 2026. Currently, in the 19th edition, Dhoni and Manish Pandey have yet to play, although they are part of CSK and KKR's rosters.
Jadeja's Return To RR
After not being retained by RR for the 2011 season, Jadeja was acquired by Kochi Tuskers. Following the termination of that franchise, he joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2012, where he remained until the 2025 season. He also played for Gujarat Lions during the bans of CSK and Royals in 2016 and 2017. Ahead of the 2026 season, Jadeja was involved in a trade that brought him and Sam Curran to RR, while Sanju Samson moved to CSK. He accepted a pay cut of ₹4 crore to rejoin the 2008 champions, earning ₹14 crore for the 2026 season, down from ₹18 crore in 2025 with CSK.
