Ravichandran Ashwin Questions Cameron Green's Bowling Role for IPL 2026

Concerns Raised Over Cameron Green's Bowling Duties

Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed worries regarding Cameron Green's responsibilities as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches. He proposed that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should have the authority to reduce Green's hefty salary of Rs 25.20 crore if he fails to meet his bowling obligations. This statement comes just days before the tournament kicks off, amid scrutiny of Green's performance and workload management.

Having become the most expensive overseas player in IPL history during the auction, Green is anticipated to play a pivotal role for KKR this season. However, there are lingering doubts about his ability to consistently bowl his full quota of overs.

On his Hindi YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, Ashwin raised a critical question: “Will Cricket Australia permit Green to bowl four overs in every IPL match?” He emphasized that franchises investing significantly in all-rounders expect complete contributions in both batting and bowling.

“If you are KKR and Shah Rukh Khan, having invested Rs 25 crore in one player, and he states, ‘I will only bowl one over,’ how would you feel?” Ashwin remarked.

He also pointed out the broader issue of international workload management, where national boards often prioritize formats like Test cricket. “Cricket Australia is saying, ‘You can play in the IPL, but Test cricket is our priority.’ He is centrally contracted with them, but IPL teams should have similar rights,” he stated.

Ashwin proposed that IPL franchises should be allowed to include performance-based clauses in player contracts. “If a player bowls only two overs, they should be able to deduct Rs 2 crore from his contract fee. If he cannot deliver the four overs, the team should have the right to reduce his pay,” he explained.

“When he entered the auction, teams expected him to bowl four overs each time. If there are limitations, the team should be able to adjust the contract amount accordingly. This is my straightforward opinion,” he added.

KKR Faces Bowling Challenges Ahead of the Season

KKR is also grappling with injury issues within their bowling lineup as the season approaches. Harshit Rana and Akash Deep have been ruled out for IPL 2026, while Matheesha Pathirana is expected to miss the initial matches but may return by mid-April, as confirmed by the team. With limited bowling resources, KKR will be counting on Green to perform well with both bat and ball when the season commences. His ability to complete his overs could be vital for the team's success.
