Ravichandran Ashwin Praises Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid for Transforming India's Batting Style
Transformative Leadership in Indian Cricket
Ravichandran Ashwin has credited former captain Rohit Sharma and ex-coach Rahul Dravid for revolutionizing India's aggressive batting strategy, which has led to significant success. According to Ashwin, this duo not only advocated for a more offensive style of play but also exemplified it, resulting in a notable change in India's approach to T20 and ODI formats.
On his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat,' Ashwin remarked, 'Rohit has consistently stamped his authority as captain by demonstrating his expectations from the team. The evolution of India's batting in T20s and ODIs—characterized by a faster pace—can largely be attributed to Rohit and Rahul bhai.'
He further explained, 'They set the standard; Rahul bhai emphasized the need for this style, while Rohit led by example, ultimately transforming how Indian cricket views batting. In white-ball cricket, it's not just about averages; it's about strike rates.'
Under the guidance of Rohit and Dravid, India embraced a more aggressive strategy following several underwhelming performances in ICC tournaments. This shift was evident during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India showcased an attacking mindset throughout the league stage, and later during their victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean and USA.
With legends Rohit and Virat Kohli now focusing solely on ODIs after stepping back from other formats, Ashwin encouraged fans to appreciate their remaining time on the international stage. 'We should cherish every moment we get to see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bat. Once they retire, we might reminisce about their greatness and wish for their return, but that won't change the reality,' he stated.
'As long as they are active, let's celebrate their contributions. Life moves quickly, and time waits for no one. It's crucial to recognize that our time with them is limited, so we should enjoy their performances while we can.'
Questioning Team Selection
Ashwin also expressed concerns regarding the Indian team's selection process, particularly after all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI against South Africa, despite Hardik Pandya's absence.
Many anticipated Reddy, a pace-bowling all-rounder akin to Pandya, would take his place in the lineup for the series opener. However, he remained on the bench.
'If we can't find a spot for Nitish Kumar Reddy in a team missing Hardik Pandya, then there are serious issues with the squad selection,' Ashwin commented. 'He was chosen for his ability to provide what Hardik offers and to grow over time. If he can't make it into this XI, then the selection process needs a thorough review.'
