Ashwin Reflects on His Career and Team Dynamics

In Kolkata, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his admiration for Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, particularly praising his focus on team success over individual accolades. Ashwin discussed his relationships with key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as well as the challenges currently facing the Indian Test cricket team.

During an event hosted by RevSportz, Ashwin, who boasts an impressive record of 537 wickets in 106 Tests, shared insights about his retirement, leadership roles within the squad, and the future of Test cricket.

He recounted the moment he realized his tenure with the national team was concluding, stating, “At Perth, during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, I recognized that my time was up as the senior bowler.”

After participating in the second Test in Brisbane last year, where he scored 22 and 7 runs and took a wicket, Ashwin officially retired from international cricket. Over his career, he accumulated 765 wickets across all formats and scored 4,394 runs, including six centuries and 15 fifties in 233 innings. Ashwin was part of the victorious teams in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, leaving behind a legacy as one of India's premier all-rounders after a remarkable 15-year journey.

His retirement, which coincided with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's departures, sparked criticism towards the team management, particularly aimed at Gambhir, who faced backlash on social media amid claims that senior players were pressured to retire. However, Ashwin defended Gambhir, stating, “I appreciate Gautam; he prioritizes the team over individual players. He acknowledges the team’s efforts rather than focusing on individual performances, which I respect.”

Ashwin also emphasized the importance of fostering a culture within the Indian dressing room that values collective success over individual stardom. “Indian cricket encompasses more than just a few standout players,” he remarked.

Reflecting on his long-standing camaraderie with Kohli and Sharma, Ashwin noted, “The best aspect of our group was our mutual support; we never blamed one another. Our shared goal was to win for India and bring pride to our nation.”

He concluded by addressing the ongoing transition within the Indian Test team, acknowledging the difficulties they face. “The team is evolving. While batting against spin is a challenge, I believe we will develop strong batters. However, the effectiveness of our bowling is a concern,” he stated.
