Ravichandran Ashwin Advocates for MS Dhoni's Role in IPL 2026

Ashwin's Perspective on Dhoni's Participation

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian off-spinner, has expressed his belief that MS Dhoni, a legendary figure for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), should be included in the playing XI for the entire IPL 2026 season, rather than being utilized solely as an Impact Player. Ashwin emphasized Dhoni's vital contribution to the CSK team, suggesting that if Dhoni is not willing to play, he should refrain from participating altogether. Despite a decline in his batting prowess, Ashwin noted that Dhoni still possesses the ability to hit big shots and remains sharp behind the stumps.

"I do not agree with the notion that he should only be an impact player. If he is part of the squad, he must play. If he prefers not to, then he should not participate at all," Ashwin stated during his show, 'Ash ki Baat'. He further elaborated on Dhoni's potential contributions, including assisting CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in field placements and mentoring the new bowling lineup. Ashwin pointed out that last season, the Gaikwad-led team lacked sufficient batting strength, and with improvements made, Dhoni's experience could be invaluable on the field.

Dhoni's Expected Role in IPL 2026

What will Dhoni's role be for CSK in IPL 2026?

"I believe Dhoni will play a crucial role in supporting the new bowling attack. Last year, he wanted to bat in the final overs, but due to the top order's struggles, he often had to come in earlier. This season, with added strength in the top order, he may only need to bat higher in a few matches, while primarily focusing on his keeping duties and guiding Ruturaj," Ashwin added.

There is no doubt that if Dhoni is in the squad, he should play, and Ashwin suggested that if he is unwilling, retirement might be the best option. Reflecting on last season, Ashwin noted that Dhoni remains confident in his abilities and has been training diligently for IPL 2026. While acknowledging that Dhoni may no longer fit the role of a number six batter, he still has much to offer as a mentor on the field.

The Case for Dhoni's Continued Play

Why should Dhoni retire from IPL?

"If Dhoni is part of the CSK XI, the discussion should end there. He must be included in the lineup. If he doesn't want to play, then he should retire. He is fully committed to playing and has been practicing for the last three months. His actions indicate he wants to contribute, regardless of others' opinions. While he may not be the same player he once was, he can still serve as a guiding presence for Ruturaj," Ashwin remarked.

The 39-year-old also speculated on CSK's strategy, suggesting that Dhoni might take on wicketkeeping duties and bat at No. 7, considering his age and the need for a strong finish. He believes Dhoni can still deliver impactful performances with his big-hitting capabilities, which could be crucial for the team. "I observed him during practice, and he still has the ability to hit big shots. Although he may not be the player he once was, his dedication is evident," Ashwin concluded.
