Rashid Khan's Commitment to His Roots

Rashid Khan, the renowned leg-spinner from Afghanistan, has revealed that he declined offers for citizenship and the opportunity to represent two countries, including India, to stay true to his homeland. The 27-year-old cricketer shared this insight in his forthcoming book, Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom. He recounts being approached about the possibility of switching allegiances during the 2023 IPL season.

In his book, Rashid states, "I received offers for citizenship and to play from both Australia and India. However, I told them, 'If I don't play for my country, I won't play for any other country either.'" He elaborates on the Indian offer but does not provide details about the Australian approach. A team administrator informed him that a 'high-ranking official from the Indian Cricket Board' wished to meet him while he was with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Rashid recalls, "I went over and greeted him. We started talking, and he said: 'The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.' I was taken aback by his words and didn't know how to respond. But I smiled and said, 'Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan.'"

This isn't the first time Rashid's loyalty to Afghanistan has made headlines. His dedication was notably highlighted during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018, where he played a pivotal role in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders, scoring 34 runs off 10 balls and taking three wickets. Following this performance, fans in India initiated a social media campaign urging the government to grant him citizenship, tagging then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in their posts. She responded by stating that citizenship matters were handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

At that time, Ashraf Ghani, the president of Afghanistan, strongly supported Rashid, calling him a national pride and asserting that the country would not let go of one of its finest cricket players. Rashid later expressed gratitude to Ghani for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to Afghanistan, a sentiment he has consistently maintained despite opportunities to relocate.

Rashid's journey from the challenging streets of Nangarhar to becoming a prominent T20 player reflects Afghanistan's rise in international cricket. His story, from being overlooked during an Afghanistan Under-19 trial to achieving global fame and winning the 2020 ICC Player of the Decade award, is detailed in his book.

Currently, Rashid is competing for the Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. He has claimed 6 wickets in five matches, averaging 25.66, although his batting performance has been modest, with only 24 runs in 2 innings at a strike rate of 141.17.
