Rashid Khan's Struggles with Red-Ball Cricket

New Delhi [India] - On April 9, Afghanistan's star spinner Rashid Khan opened up about the difficulties he faces in red-ball cricket, largely due to medical advice urging him to steer clear of it.

Despite the warnings, Rashid has made efforts to participate, even managing to bowl extensive spells following his back surgery. However, medical professionals cautioned that continuing in this format could jeopardize his career longevity.

Since 2023, Rashid has been dealing with a lower-back injury. Afghanistan is set to compete in a Test match against India in June in New Chandigarh.

“Red-ball cricket poses a challenge for me, as my doctor advised me to avoid it. Nevertheless, I chose to play. After my surgery, I participated in a match against Zimbabwe and bowled an astonishing 67 overs, which was excessive. The doctor warned me that if I continued with red-ball cricket, it could hinder my ability to play for an extended period,” Rashid Khan shared with reporters.

He also mentioned that he is reconsidering his participation in Test matches due to the significant physical demands, especially after bowling a high number of overs in recent games. While he remains dedicated to One Day Internationals (ODIs) and aims for a prolonged career with Afghanistan, he intends to manage his workload to maintain fitness and prevent injuries, particularly with the ODI World Cup on the horizon.

“I will definitely think about my future in Test cricket. However, I truly enjoy ODI cricket. I feel fit enough to play ODIs for a long time with Afghanistan. My focus will be on not overexerting myself to ensure a longer career,” he stated.

“In my last two Test matches, I bowled a total of 126 overs, which is excessive. I plan to take a more measured approach and prepare for the World Cup. If I were to injure my back during a Test match, it would prevent me from playing 100 Tests. I don’t have a specific target in Test cricket,” he added.

Since achieving Test status in 2017, the Afghanistan national team has played 12 Test matches, with Rashid Khan participating in only six. In those six matches, he has taken 45 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls.
