Rajnandgaon's Om Kumar Yadav Shines at U-18 National Hockey Camp

New Delhi [India] - Om Kumar Yadav, hailing from the small town of Rajnandgaon in Basantpur, Chhattisgarh, has made history by becoming the sole representative from his state selected for Hockey India's ongoing U-18 National Coaching Camp at SAI Bhopal.

Impressive Performance at National Championship

The young forward secured his spot in the camp following a stellar performance at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2026 – Division 'B' held in Rajgir, Bihar, where he netted six goals, as reported in a recent announcement.

Inspired by Family and Icons

Yadav's passion for hockey was ignited by his older brothers, Rinku and Arjun Yadav, who are currently training at the Lucknow Hockey NCOE. He began playing the sport at the tender age of six. Reflecting on his journey, Yadav shared, “I started playing hockey after watching my eldest brother, Rinku. I have always been a fan of the sport; it’s the only one I follow. My journey began at six, and I’ve been dedicated ever since.”

Idolizing a Hockey Legend

Growing up, Yadav looked up to Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Men’s Indian Hockey team and a two-time Olympic Bronze medallist. He expressed, “Harmanpreet Singh is my idol. His movement on the field and the precision of his passes inspire me greatly. He has an incredible eye for goal, whether in open play or during set-pieces.”

Rigorous Training and Preparation

In preparation for the national championship, Yadav trained at the Khelo India Centre in Bilaspur, where he refined his skills under the mentorship of former Olympian Ajit Lakra. His determination to excel in the tournament was evident as he dedicated himself to rigorous practice.

Aiming for the U-18 Asia Cup

Now part of the coaching camp led by Sardar Singh, Yadav is eager to impress and secure a position in the 24-player squad for the U-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, scheduled from May 29 to June 6, as well as compete against Australia’s U-18 teams from May 11 to 21.

Learning from the Best

Reflecting on his experience at the camp, Yadav stated, “It’s been five days since we joined, and meeting Sardar Singh has been a remarkable experience. We are currently focusing on the fundamentals while also learning new techniques. He helps us identify our mistakes and improve our game, making it a valuable learning opportunity.”

With aspirations of representing India, Yadav is committed to enhancing his skills, particularly in passing and creating space on the field. He aims to establish himself in the U-18 Indian Men’s hockey team, showcasing talent from a state that is not traditionally known for hockey.
