The Rajasthan Royals (RR) are gearing up for their IPL 2026 opener against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium in Guwahati. Following a significant overhaul, the team has traded their long-time captain, Sanju Samson, to CSK, prompting the need for a new leader. The franchise has appointed Riyan Parag as the new captain ahead of the tournament.

Head coach Kumar Sangakkara revealed that Parag was not the sole candidate for the captaincy. Reports indicate that other players, including Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Sandeep Sharma, were also in contention for the role. In an interview with Cricbuzz, Sangakkara emphasized that all five candidates demonstrated leadership potential.

However, Riyan Parag stood out due to his evident maturity and thoughtful responses during discussions. Sangakkara noted, "We engaged in multiple conversations with each candidate, and Riyan consistently showcased his growth and reflective nature. His vision for the team and approach to leadership made him the top choice."
