Rajasthan Royals Coach Addresses Recent Controversies and Player Performance
Controversies Surrounding Rajasthan Royals
The head coach of Rajasthan Royals, Kumar Sangakkara, has spoken out regarding the recent controversies affecting the team, emphasizing that they do not reflect positively on the franchise. This season, the Royals have faced two significant issues. In a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, team manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was seen using a mobile device in the dugout, which is against BCCI regulations, resulting in a fine of 1 lakh imposed by the Anti-Corruption Unit. Additionally, during a game against Punjab Kings, captain Riyan Parag was caught vaping, leading to speculation about a potential ban from the BCCI. Ultimately, he received a fine equivalent to 25 percent of his match fee and a demerit point instead of a ban.
Sangakkara stated that the players are consistently reminded of their responsibilities towards the team's culture and values. "Controversies are certainly not a positive reflection on the team," he remarked in Jaipur, just before their upcoming match against Delhi Capitals. "Both issues have been addressed by the BCCI and the franchise. We strive to maintain a positive and healthy culture, adhering to our values. Players must be accountable to the franchise and our culture." Currently, the Royals are performing well in IPL 2026, sitting fourth on the points table with six victories and three losses. Key contributions from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been instrumental in their success, although the middle order has raised some concerns. However, Riyan Parag's recent performance, scoring 29 runs against PBKS, provided much-needed relief.
Sangakkara's Advice to Riyan Parag
You Can't Bat Like Captain: Sangakkara's Advice to Parag
Sangakkara praised Parag for his leadership and highlighted his impactful innings against Punjab Kings, which he believes is the type of performance expected from him. The veteran cricketer encouraged Parag to enjoy his game and not feel the pressure of captaincy while batting. "He has performed admirably as a captain," Sangakkara noted. "His innings in the last match shifted the momentum in our favor. He played fearlessly, even in challenging conditions, and helped us regain the required run rate. Those are the kinds of innings I want to see from Riyan. His batting skills are unquestionable, and it sometimes takes time for a batter to settle in. I just want him to enjoy his batting. You can't approach batting as a captain; you need to play as Riyan Parag the batter. You are only captaining when fielding. It's crucial to separate those roles and bat without pressure or expectations, focusing on what the team needs, which he demonstrated in the last game."
