Match Abandoned Due to Rain

Chester-le-Street [UK], July 2: The inaugural T20I clash of the bilateral series between India and England was called off due to relentless rain after the first innings on Wednesday.

India batted first, setting a formidable target of 190 runs for the English team. However, the hosts were unable to take the field due to the weather conditions, and after waiting for over an hour and a half, the match was officially abandoned.

This incident marks the third time an international match has been canceled at this venue for India, with two ODIs previously called off in 2002 and 2011.

Looking ahead, India is scheduled to face England in the second T20I in Manchester on Saturday.

Choosing to bat first, India retained the same opening pair, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi awaited his international debut.

Sanju Samson had a disappointing outing, scoring just one run before being dismissed, while Ishan Kishan failed to get off the mark and was run out.

Abhishek Sharma played a pivotal role, contributing a rapid 82 runs for the third wicket alongside Shreyas Iyer, reaching his half-century in a mere 20 balls.

He was dismissed in the ninth over, trapped LBW by Sam Curran, finishing with 59 runs off 24 balls, including four sixes and six fours.

Iyer, on the other hand, took a more measured approach, scoring 67 runs off 47 balls, supported by six fours and a six. He formed partnerships of 36 runs with Tilak Varma and 41 runs with Shivam Dube for the fifth wicket.

Varma managed 13 runs before being dismissed by Saqib Mahmood, who concluded his spell with impressive figures of 33 runs for three wickets.

Shivam Dube provided a vital contribution, remaining unbeaten on 42 runs off 21 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes.

Harshit Rana was promoted in the batting order but was stumped by Jos Buttler off Adil Rashid's bowling. Axar Patel added three runs before being dismissed on the last ball of the innings.

Adil Rashid and Sam Curran each took one wicket, while Mahmood claimed three.
