Rahul Dravid Advocates for Bowlers in Modern T20 Cricket
The Shift in T20 Cricket Dynamics
In the realm of T20 cricket, particularly highlighted during IPL 2026, the game has increasingly favored batters. High scores, often exceeding 250, are becoming commonplace, which poses significant challenges for bowlers. Former Indian captain and coach Rahul Dravid has expressed that bowlers must enhance their skills to keep pace with the evolving batting techniques. He noted that players like Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have revolutionized batting strategies, focusing on aggressive play from the outset, leading to frequent high scores during powerplays. Dravid remarked, “To witness the advancements in batting quality over the past few years, it’s clear that bowlers will need to catch up in this format.”
Batters' Adaptation to T20
Dravid pointed out that batters have adapted more effectively to the demands of modern T20 cricket compared to bowlers, although he remains optimistic that bowlers will eventually find their footing. He stated, “Currently, many batsmen are better equipped to meet the challenges of T20 than some bowlers, but this could change in the next few years.” He also noted that bowlers have been more dominant in Test cricket, with a noticeable increase in match results, suggesting that they could regain their edge in T20 formats as well.
Need for Improved Pitch Conditions
Dravid emphasized the necessity for pitches that provide more assistance to bowlers, advocating for conditions that create a more balanced competition. He suggested that wickets should be designed to offer some support to bowlers, whether through spin or pace and bounce. “We cannot simply increase boundary sizes, as space is limited, but we can certainly make pitches more challenging for batters,” he concluded.
