A Tribute to a Tennis Legend

New Delhi [India] - Rafael Nadal is set to receive a special tribute during this year's French Open, celebrating his extraordinary contributions and achievements at Roland Garros, according to reports from a sports media outlet.

The 38-year-old Spanish tennis star boasts an impressive record of 22 Grand Slam titles, with a remarkable 14 of those victories secured on the clay courts of Paris. The honor will be presented on the tournament's opening Sunday, May 25, on Court Philippe-Chatrier, right after the day's matches.

Having retired in November of the previous year, Nadal is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning singles in Beijing 2008 and doubles in Rio 2016. His astonishing win-loss record at Roland Garros stands at 112-4, and he is expected to take on an ambassadorial role for the Grand Slam event.

Gilles Moretton, president of the French Tennis Federation, expressed his sentiments about the tribute, stating, "It’s a love story. It’s essential to acknowledge this relationship as he holds immense respect for the tournament and clay, and we reciprocate that respect for him as a player and potential ambassador for Roland Garros and the federation."

Amelie Mauresmo, the tournament director, mentioned that the specifics of the ceremony will be kept under wraps. "Rafa has undoubtedly left a significant mark on the history of Roland Garros, and his 14 titles may remain unmatched in Grand Slam history. Although he won't compete this year, he will be with us for the 2025 edition. His connection with Roland Garros is profound, and we want to keep the details a surprise," she noted.

Nadal first claimed the title in Paris in 2005 and last won it in 2022. His final appearance at the French Open occurred in 2024, where he faced Alexander Zverev in the first round.

Zverev became only the third player to defeat Nadal at Roland Garros, joining the ranks of Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic (who has done so twice).

Last year, Nadal also competed on the clay courts during the Olympics, where he lost to Djokovic in the second round of singles and exited the doubles alongside Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
