R Vaishali Triumphs in FIDE Women’s Candidates, Secures World Championship Spot
R Vaishali's Historic Victory
New Delhi [India], April 15 (Media House): Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali has emerged victorious in the FIDE Women’s Candidates tournament, defeating Kateryna Lagno in the final round held in Cyprus.
This remarkable achievement guarantees her a spot in the upcoming Women’s World Championship match against the current champion, Ju Wenjun, later this year.
At just 24 years old, R Vaishali secured the title by a narrow margin of half a point, clinching her victory with a pivotal final-round win over Lagno. Playing with the white pieces, she demonstrated exceptional skill and composure, ultimately finishing at the top of the leaderboard.
Entering the tournament as one of the lower-rated competitors, Vaishali's impressive performance has drawn parallels to D Gukesh’s extraordinary Candidates victory in 2024, where he also triumphed despite a lower rating.
Her consistent play throughout the tournament was crucial, allowing her to surpass a competitive field and earn her place in the championship match against Ju Wenjun.
This victory marks a significant improvement from her previous performance in 2024, where she scored 7.5 points and shared second place. This time, she enhanced her score by a full point, finishing decisively at the top and achieving one of the most significant milestones in her career.
“Competing for a world championship title is an incredible honor – I’m thrilled she has come this far,” remarked her childhood coach, RB Ramesh, during a live stream on Chessbase India, as Vaishali concluded her game against Lagno, as reported by ESPN.
“She maintained her composure at critical moments. It’s a fantastic result,” Ramesh added.
The Women’s Candidates tournament has a rich history, first established in 1952 to determine the challenger for the Women’s World Championship. Although the format changed to knockout tournaments in 1997, the Candidates format was reinstated in 2019, restoring the traditional match system for determining the Women’s World Champion.
