Sindhu's Emotional Farewell to Marin

New Delhi [India] - March 27: PV Sindhu, India's renowned badminton player, shared a touching tribute to Carolina Marin following the latter's announcement of retirement from professional badminton, emphasizing that the sport will greatly miss one of its toughest competitors.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sindhu reminisced about her long-standing rivalry and friendship with the Olympic gold medalist from Rio, reflecting on their journey from young competitors to established rivals on the international stage.

“Some rivals become an integral part of your journey, and Carolina was certainly one of them. We first faced each other when we were just 15 or 16 years old in the Maldives, and since then, we have shared countless battles. Honestly, you were quite a challenge on the court. Your constant shouting, intensity, and clever tricks could frustrate anyone. However, your skill, speed, and fighting spirit were unparalleled,” Sindhu expressed.

Sindhu also recalled a particularly tense moment during a match, highlighting the respect that characterized their relationship off the court.

“People often remember the significant matches and even the heated argument we had during that third set over a shuttle call. I must admit, I was furious that day. Yet, a few months later, we found ourselves sharing coffee in Madrid, laughing and talking, and in that moment, all that existed was mutual respect. That’s the Carolina I will always cherish,” she added.

Sindhu acknowledged their generation's role in advancing women's singles badminton and expressed gratitude for the bond they formed.

“I will always appreciate the incredible camaraderie our generation fostered. Our group of girls made women's singles a remarkable arena to compete in, and I genuinely believe badminton has not witnessed anything like it before, nor will it again. Thank you for every match, every lesson, and most importantly, the friendship. I wish you a joyful retirement, Carolina. Badminton will miss you, and so will I,” she concluded.

In response, Marin warmly acknowledged Sindhu's message, commenting, “Thank you, my friend, for your kind words. As you mentioned, we had numerous battles on the court, but each one was filled with respect. You are more than just a rival; you are a dear friend. I hope to see you soon.”

The 32-year-old Marin, who clinched the gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, announced her retirement via a social media video, marking the end of a remarkable career.

She confirmed her absence from the upcoming European Championships in her hometown of Huelva, despite having received a wild-card entry for the event scheduled from April 6 to 12.

Marin's illustrious career, which includes three World Championship titles and several European championships, was also marred by numerous injuries. She faced her first significant injury in 2019, followed by a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear in her left knee in May 2021, just months ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, she suffered another rupture, from which she has yet to fully recover.

Regarded as one of the greatest players of her era, Marin leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of badminton.
