PV Sindhu Takes on New Role in Badminton Governance

New Delhi, December 25: PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion, has been appointed as the Chair of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes' Commission for the term spanning 2026 to 2029, according to reports from a sports news outlet.


In her new position, Sindhu will also join the BWF Council, ensuring that athletes have a direct influence on the organization’s governance at a global level.


Expressing her gratitude for this significant role, Sindhu acknowledged the contributions of Greysia Polii, who previously held the position. “It is a privilege to be given this responsibility by my fellow athletes, and I carry it with great humility. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Greysia Polii for her remarkable service during her term,” Sindhu stated.


Greysia Polii, an Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2020 and a champion in women’s doubles at the Asian Games, retired from competitive badminton in 2022. She served on the BWF Athletes' Commission for two terms, with her last term running from 2021 to 2025.


“I am eager to collaborate with the BWF to advocate for every player and to strive for impactful, enduring changes that truly matter,” Sindhu, who has been part of the BWF Athletes' Commission since 2017 and has served as an Integrity Ambassador since 2020, shared on her social media.


As India’s most accomplished badminton player, Sindhu won a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The 30-year-old athlete is also set to lead the Indian team at the upcoming 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Qingdao, China.


Debora Jille from the Netherlands, who earned a silver medal in women’s doubles at the European Games, will serve as the Deputy Chair of the commission. Other notable representatives include An Se-young, the reigning Olympic champion in women’s singles from South Korea, Doha Hany, a six-time African Games medalist from Egypt, and Jia Yifan, who is set to compete for gold in women’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympics.


In the para-badminton sector, Chan Ho Yuen Daniel from Hong Kong, who previously acted as interim chair, will now take on the role permanently. Indian para-badminton player Abu Hubaida is also part of the commission.
