Strong Start for Indian Contingent at Singapore Open

New Delhi [India] - On May 26, Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and the men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty kicked off their Singapore Open journey with impressive victories, progressing to the next stage at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday.


Sindhu triumphed over Indonesia's Putri Kusuma Wardani with scores of 21-17, 21-18 in the women's singles, while the duo of Satwik and Chirag overcame Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith with a scoreline of 26-28, 21-15, 21-13 in men's doubles, as reported in a press release.


The reigning champion from the 2022 edition, Sindhu, managed to defeat the fifth-seeded Indonesian player in straight sets, leveling their head-to-head encounters at 3-3. She initially took control of the first game, leading by four points. Despite a momentary lapse, Sindhu quickly regained her composure, equalizing at 16-all before clinching five consecutive points to win the first game.


The second game was fiercely contested, with Sindhu maintaining her lead at critical junctures before ultimately securing the match in straight games. Her next opponent will be Japan's Riko Gunji in the pre-quarterfinals.


In the men's doubles, the World No. 4 pair of Satwik and Chirag faced a challenging start, losing the first game after saving seven game points in a tightly fought contest. However, they bounced back strongly, forcing a decisive third game, which they dominated to win 21-13 after an hour and 15 minutes of play. They will face Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan in the Round of 16.


In men's singles, Ayush Shetty fought valiantly against Victor Lai. After winning the first game comfortably at 21-11, he struggled to maintain his momentum, ultimately losing the next two games 14-21, 12-21. Other Indian players competing on day one faced defeats against their respective opponents.
