Punjab FC Triumphs in Dramatic Final

Bambolim (Goa) [India], May 14: In a thrilling rematch of last year's championship, Punjab FC successfully defended their DSC AIFF Junior League title, overcoming Minerva Academy FC with a 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout after the match concluded in a 1-1 draw at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium on Thursday.


The scoring opened with Jasmeet Singh netting for Punjab FC in the 38th minute, but Minerva Academy FC equalized shortly after halftime, with Md Azam Khan finding the back of the net in the 49th minute.


During the penalty shootout, Pawandeep Singh, Aayush Koul, Akash P, Kabyansh Rai, and Jasmeet Singh all converted their kicks for Punjab FC, while Konthoujam Denamoni, Md Azam Khan, and Greatson Hidam scored for Minerva Academy FC. However, Ramung Zimik's attempt was thwarted by the Punjab goalkeeper.


Augustasya Gupta was awarded Player of the Match for his crucial penalty save, while Jasmeet Singh's outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament title.


Minerva Academy FC aimed to control the game from the start, dominating possession with 67% and creating seven clear chances in the first half. Despite their control, they struggled to convert opportunities into goals.


As the match progressed, Punjab FC began to find their footing and took the lead against the run of play in the 38th minute, thanks to a well-placed through ball from Kamlesh Chand that allowed Jasmeet Singh to score.


The second half kicked off with immediate intensity, as Punjab FC earned a free-kick early on, but it did not result in a goal. Shortly after, Minerva Academy FC equalized through a brilliant individual effort by MD Azam Khan, who dribbled past defenders and capitalized on a rebound to score.


Azam nearly scored again in the 53rd minute, but a timely clearance from Akash P denied him the opportunity. The second half turned into a nail-biting contest, with both teams creating chances but failing to convert.


In the final minutes of regulation, Minerva Academy FC had several opportunities to take the lead, but the match remained tied, leading to eight minutes of stoppage time and ultimately a penalty shootout.


Punjab FC took the first penalty, with Pawandeep Singh scoring. Minerva Academy FC's Konthoujam Denamoni equalized, but Punjab FC's Aayush Koul and Minerva's Azam Khan matched each other again. The pivotal moment came when Akash P scored for Punjab FC, while Ramung Zimik's attempt was saved by Gupta.


Kabyansh Rai then scored for Punjab FC, putting pressure on Minerva Academy FC, who managed to keep their hopes alive with a goal from Greatson Hidam. However, Punjab FC's captain Jasmeet Singh sealed the victory with a successful fifth penalty, clinching the title for his team.
