Bambolim (Goa) [India], May 14: In a rematch of last year's championship, Punjab FC successfully defended their AIFF Junior League title, edging out Minerva Academy FC with a dramatic 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout after the match concluded 1-1 in regular time at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium on Thursday.
Punjab FC initially took the lead with a goal from Jasmeet Singh in the 38th minute, but Minerva Academy FC equalized shortly after halftime, with Md Azam Khan scoring in the 49th minute.
During the penalty shootout, Pawandeep Singh, Aayush Koul, Akash P, Kabyansh Rai, and Jasmeet Singh successfully converted their penalties for Punjab FC. Minerva Academy FC's Konthoujam Denamoni, Md Azam Khan, and Greatson Hidam found the net, but Ramung Zimik's attempt was thwarted by the goalkeeper.
Augustasya Gupta was awarded Player of the Match for his crucial penalty save, while Jasmeet Singh earned the Player of the Tournament title for his outstanding performance throughout the league.
Minerva Academy FC aimed to control the game from the start, dominating possession with 67% and creating seven clear chances in the first half. However, they struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.
Punjab FC began to regain their footing after the first half-hour, and against the run of play, they scored the opening goal in the 38th minute. Jasmeet Singh capitalized on a precise through ball from Kamlesh Chand, beating the goalkeeper to give his team a crucial lead.
The second half kicked off with intense action, as Punjab FC earned a free-kick in a promising position, but it did not result in a goal. Shortly after, Minerva Academy FC equalized through a brilliant individual effort by MD Azam Khan, who dribbled past two defenders and scored after reacting quickly to a rebound.
Azam nearly scored again in the 53rd minute, but a timely clearance from Akash P denied Minerva Academy FC the lead.
The match turned into a tense back-and-forth affair, with Punjab FC coming close to regaining the lead through a spectacular save by the Minerva Academy FC goalkeeper on a shot from substitute Arambam Deepak Singh.
In the final ten minutes of regulation, Minerva Academy FC created several chances but failed to convert. The referee added eight minutes of stoppage time, during which both teams pushed for a winner, but the match ultimately went to penalties.
Punjab FC took the first penalty, with Pawandeep Singh scoring to give them an early lead. Minerva Academy FC's Konthoujam Denamoni equalized, but Punjab FC's Aayush Koul and Minerva's Azam Khan both scored, making it 2-2.
The decisive moment came in the third round of penalties when Akash P scored for Punjab FC, but Ramung Zimik's attempt for Minerva was saved by goalkeeper Augustasya Gupta.
Kabyansh Rai then converted his penalty, putting pressure on Minerva Academy FC. Greatson Hidam scored for Minerva, but it was not enough. Finally, Punjab FC captain Jasmeet Singh stepped up for the crucial fifth penalty, scoring to secure the championship.
