PSL 2026 Adjustments Amid Crisis

Lahore [Pakistan], March 22: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 will take place without any spectators due to the current crisis in West Asia. Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged citizens to limit their movements in light of the fuel crisis, as reported by a leading sports news outlet.

The tournament has been scaled down from six venues to just two, with all matches now set to occur in Lahore and Karachi. Furthermore, the opening ceremony in Lahore has been canceled.

Scheduled to commence on March 26 and conclude on May 3, the PSL will adapt to the ongoing situation.

Naqvi mentioned that the Prime Minister's request for limited movement includes measures such as school closures, work-from-home policies, and extended Eid holidays, with the duration of the conflict remaining uncertain.

“The Prime Minister has asked everyone to restrict their movements due to the fuel crisis. We have closed schools, implemented work-from-home arrangements, and extended Eid holidays. The duration of this war is still unknown,” Naqvi stated.

After discussions with security agencies, it was decided that the PSL would continue as planned, but without fans in attendance due to the ongoing crisis, leading to the cancellation of the opening ceremony.

“Considering the circumstances and after consulting with security agencies, we concluded that the PSL would proceed as scheduled. However, we cannot ask people to limit their movements and then allow 30,000 fans in stadiums daily. Therefore, we decided to hold matches without crowds for the duration of this crisis. This was a tough decision, but it was necessary. The opening ceremony will also be canceled since there would be no audience, and we need to limit movement to conserve resources,” he added.

The PCB issued a press release confirming that PSL 11 will move forward under a revised operational plan to align with national austerity measures.

In accordance with national resource-saving initiatives, the PSL 2026 has been modified to feature only two venues, and matches will initially be held without spectators to support energy conservation amid the regional geopolitical situation.

“In consultation with the Government of Pakistan and in line with the officially announced national austerity measures, the Pakistan Super League has introduced a revised operational plan for the 2026 edition. To support efficient energy use and public resource management in light of the current geopolitical climate, the number of host venues for HBL PSL 11 has been reduced from six to two. All matches will now take place in Lahore and Karachi, with a revised match schedule to be released soon,” the PCB stated.

“Additionally, under the updated government guidelines, matches will initially occur without spectators. This adjustment is made solely to support the national conservation effort and ensure the tournament is conducted responsibly,” the release continued.

With the shift to a watch-from-home format, the PSL aims to enhance its broadcast and production quality to provide an improved viewing experience, aspiring to make this edition one of the most viewed in history, according to the PCB.

“With the tournament transitioning to a watch-from-home model, PSL will introduce upgraded broadcast and production features to deliver a superior viewing experience for fans in Pakistan and globally. The League is confident that the enthusiasm of its audience, combined with innovative coverage, will make this edition one of the most widely watched ever,” the PCB added.

Commenting on the new arrangements, PSL CEO Salman Naseer emphasized that these changes reflect national responsibility and austerity, asserting that Pakistan can still host high-level cricket.

“The PSL is one of Pakistan's premier sporting events, and during this time of national austerity, it is crucial for us to embody that spirit of responsibility. These operational adjustments support a national effort while keeping the tournament on track. Pakistan is fully capable of hosting top-tier cricket, and HBL PSL 11 will continue to showcase the professionalism, resilience, and passion that define this league and its fans. We are dedicated to delivering a successful tournament and an exceptional viewing experience for millions watching from home. The momentum built in recent months has been incredibly strong, and we will persevere as we always do. Such is the resilience and passion for cricket in this nation,” the PSL CEO stated.

The PCB also announced that a comprehensive ticket refund policy for fans who had already purchased tickets will be revealed soon.
