New Delhi, August 14: On the eve of India's 80th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu commended the remarkable achievements of women athletes during the recent Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. The women sportspersons were instrumental in securing eight out of the total 13 gold medals for India.
In her address to the nation, President Murmu highlighted the role of sports in fostering youth development and contributing to nation-building. She emphasized that government initiatives like Khelo India are pivotal in enhancing the sports framework throughout the country.
“At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, our women athletes won 8 of the 13 gold medals. This reflects their growing economic independence,” the President remarked.
She further noted that sports are increasingly recognized as a tool for youth empowerment and national progress. The Khelo India initiative is crucial in nurturing talent from grassroots to the national level.
President Murmu also pointed out that the government's substantial investments in sports are beginning to show positive outcomes, with Indian athletes achieving notable success in international arenas.
“The government is making significant investments to advance sports, and these efforts are yielding impressive results. Our athletes have shown remarkable improvement in international competitions,” she stated.
India secured fourth place in the overall medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, amassing a total of 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze.
Among the gold medal winners were boxers Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, Sakshi Chaudhary, and Arundhati Choudhary, as well as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, judoka Asmita Dey, and para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar.
The Glasgow Games also marked the commencement of India's preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, with the Commonwealth Games flag being handed over during the closing ceremony.
India will commemorate its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort and deliver a speech to the nation.
