Portugal's Emotional Match Against Croatia

Toronto, Canada - On July 2, ahead of their FIFA World Cup round of 32 match against Croatia, Vitinha, a star player for Portugal and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), shared that the team is filled with "plenty of motivation" to secure a victory in memory of the late striker Diogo Jota, as the match coincides with the anniversary of his passing.

Portugal, having faced two goalless draws against DR Congo and Colombia, has made it to the round of 32 and is set to compete against Croatia, led by Luka Modric. This match carries significant emotional weight for the Cristiano Ronaldo-led squad, as Jota tragically lost his life in a road accident last year on July 3, the same day as the upcoming match.

During a pre-match press conference, Vitinha reflected on Jota's legacy, stating, "As I mentioned earlier, we have immense motivation to win this game and advance to the next round. Additionally, there is the special significance of this day (Jota's death anniversary). We are driven to win for ourselves, our families, for Diogo Jota, and for the entire country of Portugal. We will give everything we have to triumph over Croatia tomorrow."

In their opening match against DR Congo, Portugal honored Jota by wearing special wristbands. These wristbands, given to the team by Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, bear the names of all current players alongside Jota's, who tragically died in a car accident in northwestern Spain last year.

Jota, who earned 49 caps and netted 14 goals for Portugal, is fondly remembered by the national team, and his teammates are committed to keeping his spirit alive on the field throughout the tournament.
