Portugal Triumphs Over Croatia in FIFA World Cup 2026 with VAR Controversy
Portugal Advances After Thrilling Match Against Croatia
Toronto [Canada], July 3: Portugal's head coach, Roberto Martinez, stood by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions during his team's intense 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He asserted that the officials made the right choices, as reported by a news outlet.
After securing their spot in the Round of 16 on Thursday (local time), Martinez dismissed claims that Croatia was unjustly denied a second goal due to a late VAR review.
“There were no incorrect calls. We were lucky today,” Martinez stated when questioned about whether VAR had robbed Croatia of a goal. “The chip ball indicated offside, and the penalty was evident. I respect (Croatia coach Zlatko) Dalic and his team, and it’s unfortunate that only one team could win today,” he added.
Portugal rallied from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory, with Cristiano Ronaldo leveling the score from the penalty spot after a VAR check, followed by substitute Goncalo Ramos scoring a last-minute header to secure the win. Croatia had two goals disallowed for offside, including a dramatic late equalizer that was also reviewed by VAR.
Looking forward to the Round of 16 match against reigning European champions Spain, Martinez predicted an exciting encounter between two of Europe's top teams.
“We have great respect for Spain's quality. I believe it will be a fantastic match, possibly the highlight of this World Cup,” he remarked.
Martinez humorously noted the emotional strain of the match, saying, “I’ve lost my hair over this, but it’s definitely worth it.”
Portugal's comeback victory over Croatia not only secured their place in the next round but also marked a significant moment for Ivan Perisic, who became Croatia's all-time leading World Cup scorer. Ronaldo's penalty equalized the score after Croatia initially took the lead. The match also signified the potential end of Luka Modric's World Cup journey.
